What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated R&D Electronics Engineer with a diverse skillset to support the development and production of high reliability custom capacitors to meet national security needs. You will work with our suppliers and stakeholders to develop custom electronic components, then coordinate, oversee, and manage test activities to characterize and understand product performance relative to functional requirements in specified field environments. Finally, you will work to document the design, development activities, test data and other information guiding the development of these custom components. Data analysis and documentation are key elements of this position. You will work in a highly collaborative team environment engaging with engineering teams at Sandia¿s state-of-the-art electrical, mechanical (shock and vibration), and/or radiation test facilities.

For products in qualification or steady state production, you will partner closely with our production partners, suppliers, and product acceptance tester engineers. You will provide technical support for product and tester qualification activities, assess product performance, conduct production process evaluations, and participate in failure analyses as required. Occasional travel is required.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Collaborate with customers to understand requirements, needs and design constraints
  • Document engineering and design decisions, test data, and design definitions
  • Coordinate with technologists to set up tests, collect, analyze and record data, troubleshoot test setups
  • Interface with the product development team, test facilities personnel, suppliers, quality engineers, electrical test engineers, etc.
  • Analyze, document and present data on component performance
  • Evaluate production processes with an eye toward continuous improvement
  • Perform failure analyses

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$102,400 - $199,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D Electronics Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation)
  • Demonstrated experience with analog and digital circuit design and analysis
  • Hands-on experience testing and de-bugging circuitry, with clear mastery of tools such as oscilloscopes, logic/network/spectrum analyzers, function/pulse generators, etc.
  • Proven experience with design and analysis tools (e.g., Matlab and LabVIEW), analog simulation codes (e.g., LTSpice), and HDL simulation codes (e.g.,ModelSim)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams

Also, for this position we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Demonstrated experience with the design and/or analysis of high reliability custom electronic components
  • Hands-on experience with high voltage components, systems, or testers
  • Ability to create and/or use engineering models to analyze design trades and assist in resolving technical issues with electronic components
  • Experience working in a highly collaborative team environment, including mentoring others
  • Experience in analyzing and presenting technical test data
  • Ability and desire to learn new technical areas
  • Project leadership experience
  • A strong commitment to safety, security, quality, and program success
  • Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance

About Our Team:

The High Reliability Custom Technologies department designs and develops custom capacitors and magnetics (transformers of various types, inductors, solenoid coils, etc.) for nuclear weapons and other national security applications. The department covers the complete product realization lifecycle including requirements definition, design, development, specification, qualification, procurement, delivery, and stockpile support. Our designs must demonstrate electrical and mechanical functionality, high reliability, and nuclear safety across a rigorous requirements space for extended service lifetimes. We work closely with our production partners at the Kansas City National Security Campus, the Sandia External Production program, and our suppliers to realize quality product. Defect-prevention strategies are engrained in our work and design margins are quantified. We support our customers by providing innovative designs, production techniques, and hardware for new programs while continuing the development, production, and surveillance of current and legacy components. We are advancing new technologies for next generation product insertion opportunities.

Security Clearance:
