Summary

The Biostatistics and Research Data Core at the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center (CNRC) is seeking to hire a full-time Lead Biostatistician. Our mission is to oversee the design and conduct of statistical activities, including data management and statistical analysis of observational and clinical trial data, grant development, and provide training and educational opportunities to junior and Senior Biostatisticians, undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. The key responsibility of this position is to lead multi-disciplinary teams to engage in scholarly research, grant submissions, methodological development, and coordinate rigor and reproducibility efforts. This position requires experience in mathematical modeling, statistical analysis using a variety of statistical methods, leading and evaluating team members, coordinating departmental activities, and experience in designing and conducting clinical research studies in diet, nutrition, or related fields. The Lead Biostatistician will ensure statistical integrity and accuracy of research data, develop advanced statistical programs, effectively present results to investigators, and collaborate with management to define goals and strategic plans.

Job Duties

  • Participates in the supervision, training and evaluation of Core personnel and designated trainees.
  • Coordinates the daily activities of the Core and works with appropriate managerial personnel to prioritize projects and organize work groups and meetings.
  • Collaborates with management to define organizational goals and strategic plans.
  • Coordinates efforts between various stakeholders and coordinates project activities; provides guidance to personnel responsible for specific functions or phases of the project.
  • Assists with creating or reviewing deliverables for supporting sustainability activities, including standard operating procedures and technical materials.
  • Performs complex statistical analysis for projects and research grants. This may include developing statistical programs for data manipulation and implementation of standard and advanced statistical methodology.
  • Leads research and evaluation studies promoting the proper use of statistical methodology, interpretation of results, and methods development by refining current methods, integrating different methods, or creating novel methods.
  • Ensures the statistical integrity and accuracy of research data.
  • Performs protocol reviews, statistical report generation, manuscript preparation, review of statistical literature and upgrades of computer programming software.
  • Assists with dissemination of mathematical or statistical concepts to a non-statistical audience.
  • Is comfortable with joining interdisciplinary project teams to provide technical and conceptual support as needed.
  • Assists with creating or reviewing documentation for supporting Core operations including project inventories, data archiving, and standard operating procedures.
  • Leads team development activities including mentoring and technical support.
  • Participates in project tracking activities.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics or a related field.
  • Seven years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD with at least 2 years of experience managing a team.
  • Experience with conducting power calculations and writing the statistical section of grants.
  • Background in nutrition, obesity, cardiometabolic disease, aging research, or related health field.
  • Experience with SAS software.
  • Team management/training others in statistical principles, data analysis, or computer programs.
  • Excellent technical writing skills for describing statistical methods or findings of statistical investigations, promotes team science approach, experience with writing the statistical section of grants.
