Job Summary
Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative data professional to join the Data Science & Analytics (DSA) team with a focus on data governance and quality. As part of SLCC’s growing commitment to becoming a data-informed institution, this position plays a key role in supporting the College’s data governance framework and institutional data quality standards.

The Data Analyst will support the maintenance and documentation of core data governance artifacts, including data definitions, business rules, metadata standards, and validation logic. This position will assist in the creation and upkeep of SLCC’s institutional data dictionary and business glossary, while also contributing to data quality reviews and operational validation routines that protect the accuracy and trustworthiness of key institutional data.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Data Governance Framework Operations

Support the day-to-day operation of SLCC’s data governance framework.
Maintain stewardship records, ownership assignments, and governance artifacts.
Prepare materials, agendas, notes, and follow-ups for governance meetings.
Track decisions and changes to standards and business rules.
Data Validation and Quality Assurance
Build and run validation queries to identify inconsistencies and logic issues.
Trace data issues across systems with data engineers and system owners.
Maintain quality issue logs and assist with remediation workflows.
Perform recurring checks aligned to state, federal, and internal reporting cycles.
Cross-Team Collaboration & Reporting
Partner with analysts, engineers, and source data owners to resolve issues; escalate blockers with clear context and proposed next steps.
Summarize findings and explain data issues to non-technical stakeholders; support steward/trustee follow-ups.
Provide QA for dashboards/reports to ensure alignment with governed definitions; assist as needed.
Support compliance readiness by assembling evidence for audits and policy reviews.
Metadata, Definitions, and Documentation
Help maintain the institutional data dictionary, business glossary, and metadata.
Document business rules, data lineage, and validation logic.
Organize documentation libraries, SOPs, and version history.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy, consistency, and integrity of data.
Proficiency in SQL and familiarity with relational databases and data structures.
Understanding of business processes and how they impact data collection and data quality.
Ability to document and maintain business definitions, metadata, and validation logic.
Familiarity with data governance principles, stewardship roles, and data quality frameworks.
Familiarity with data privacy and security practices in higher education, including FERPA; handles restricted/PII data appropriately.
Experience supporting validation checks, QA processes, or peer reviews.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to explain data issues to non-technical stakeholders.
Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams including analysts, engineers, and system owners.
Familiarity with BI tools such as Power BI, and ability to support dashboard QA as needed.
Organized and able to manage documentation libraries, trackers, or SOPs.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills; able to investigate data anomalies and inconsistencies.
Willingness to learn new tools, improve processes, and support an evolving governance program.
Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Minimum qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative, technical, or related field.
Two (2) to four (4) years of paid, full-time experience in a professional setting working with data analysis, validation, or institutional reporting.
At least one (1) year of experience using SQL to support data analysis or validation.
Experience supporting or maintaining data documentation (e.g., data definitions, business rules, metadata).
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in a technical, quantitative, or related field.
Experience working within a data governance or data quality framework in a higher education or complex institutional setting.
Familiarity with institutional reporting requirements or compliance processes (e.g., USHE, IPEDS).
Experience using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Jira to support documentation or validation workflows.
