Laboratory Equipment Maintenance Technician

Department: Scientific Instrument Services
Location: Oklahoma City, OK
Position Overview & Responsibilities
The Scientific Instrument Services (S.I.S.) department is seeking a skilled and knowledgeable professional with a strong background in refrigeration systems, including components, circuitry, and the operation of freezers and refrigerators. This role is vital to supporting the maintenance, repair, calibration, and installation of scientific and diagnostic instruments used in cutting-edge medical research. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, technically proficient, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively with research staff and other departments. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Inspecting, repairing, maintaining, and installing electronic, electromechanical, diagnostic, and analytical equipment used in research.
  • Using service manuals, blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and specialized tools to operate, inspect, diagnose, assemble, and calibrate instrumentation.
  • Performing preventive maintenance and calibrations according to manufacturers' specifications.
  • Adjusting and replacing defective or improperly functioning circuitry and electronic components.
  • Identifying and resolving equipment malfunctions, including working with vendors or field representatives to procure and install replacement parts.
  • Consulting with research staff to ensure equipment operates safely and effectively.
  • Maintaining accurate records of time and materials for work orders; generating reports for the Accounting Department.
  • Logging preventive maintenance activities and equipment testing.
  • Providing guidance and recommendations to users for installation, upgrades, and enhancements.
  • Assisting in cost estimates and establishing standards and specifications for new equipment and materials.
  • Participating in an on-call rotation, responding to cold storage alerts via the ABS monitoring system.
  • Responding to emergency situations, such as water leaks, power outages, or equipment malfunctions.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by management

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent education and experience
  • Knowledge of circuit boards, electronic equipment, processors, chips, and instrumentation
  • Knowledge of refrigeration systems and a solid understanding of refrigeration theory of operation
  • Basic knowledge of operating computers and applicable computer software
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, the metric system, and their applications
  • Basic knowledge of scientific laboratory safety practices

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with scientific electronic equipment repair and maintenance, or vocational/technical training in electronics
  • EPA 608 Certification - Covering the handling, recovery and disposal of refrigerants
  • Experience with working in a health and/or science-based environment

Working Conditions & Physical Demands
  • Frequently required to sit, stoop, and kneel
  • Occasionally required to crouch, crawl, and lift or move up to 50 pounds
  • Potential exposure to:
    • Fumes or airborne particles
    • Toxic or caustic chemicals
    • Biohazard materials and bloodborne pathogens
    • Radioisotopes, liquid nitrogen, and animal dander
  • Occasionally exposed to cold environments (4ºC and -20ºC) from freezers
  • Risk of electrical shock
  • Noise level is usually moderate

Work Hours
  • Typically, Monday - Friday, 8AM - 5PM
  • On-Call
