The Office of General Counsel (“OGC”) at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is seeking a motivated attorney to join its dynamic legal department as a Attorney Fellow for a two-year fellowship term.

This fellowship is a unique program designed to introduce the Attorney Fellow to corporate, health care, non-profit legal practice and provide valuable exposure to and skill development within an in-house legal department.

The OGC is a full-service legal department that provides representation to Dana-Farber by navigating complex legal and ethical issues and helping to balance risks, while maintaining the highest standards of excellence and integrity. We advise Dana-Farber executives, principal investigators, physicians, employees, the Board of Trustees, and affiliates on a broad range of legal matters. Our team consists of 18 attorneys, in addition to intellectual property specialists, paralegals, and legal support professionals committed to advancing the mission of Dana-Farber.

The Attorney Fellow will report to a senior attorney, such as Associate General Counsel or Senior Counsel.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist all attorneys and handle independent projects across the diverse areas supported by the Office of General Counsel, including health care transactions and regulatory, patient care, safety and quality, tax, tax-exempt and non-profit compliance, charitable giving, governance, legislative policy, employment and labor, corporate, litigation and dispute avoidance, investigations, real estate, research, and intellectual property.
  • These projects will require the following responsibilities, among others:
    • Conducting legal research and analysis.
    • Delivering clear and concise legal guidance.
    • Reviewing, drafting, and/or negotiating various contracts, understanding Dana-Farber’s business and legal risk tolerance.
    • Reviewing, drafting, revising and/or advising on Dana-Farber policies and procedures.
    • Collaboration and extensive interactions with attorneys and colleagues within the Office of General Counsel in addition to stakeholders across Dana-Farber as well as outside counsel or third parties.

Minimum Education:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school required.

Minimum Experience:

  • 3 years of relevant experience required, preferably in law firm, corporate legal department, or government setting.
  • Familiarity with health care and charitable organizations preferred. Attorneys looking to build upon their current practice by obtaining in-house experience offered through this Fellowship are strongly preferred.

License/Certification/Registration:

  • Current Massachusetts bar admission or admission in another jurisdiction with the ability to become licensed to practice in Massachusetts.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Strong client service ethic and professionalism.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Attention to detail, desire to learn, and ability to exercise excellent judgment.
  • Strong team orientation with the ability to collaborate both within the Office of General Counsel and across Dana-Farber.
