Minimum Education:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in biology, chemistry or related natural science by date of appointment.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor's degree in microbiology or molecular biology.

Minimum Experience:

At least 1 year of laboratory experience.

Preferred Experience:

More than three years of laboratory experience; supervisory or instructional experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the laboratory preparation for biology courses; includes set-up, maintain, and dismantle laboratory experiments, demonstrations and equipment needed; prepare chemical solutions, reagents, and media for instructional laboratories; clean and adjust laboratory equipment; develop and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment needed for lab classes. Communicate with lab instructors regarding lab notes.
  • Manage the Biology stockroom; includes order, maintain, and dispense basic lab and safety supplies for biology courses and for research; includes fluorescent and germicidal light bulbs for laminar flow and bio-safety hoods; ethanol is ordered and dispensed under federal guidelines for department use.
  • Serve as the safety resource for Biology. Coordinate and dispose of chemical waste in accordance with Environmental, Health and Safety procedures through Environmental Health and Safety Office.
  • Support faculty, staff and students with vendor relations and orders; includes source items and handle returns; coordinate ordering and delivery of gas cylinders, maintenance of liquid nitrogen system, installation and in house training for new equipment; coordinate service calls for preventive maintenance, repairs and certifications, and assist with shipping.
  • Train and supervise undergraduate students and graduate teaching assistants concerning instructional laboratory set-up and safety procedures; train and supervise student employees in the stockroom.
  • Work with sales and contract representatives from vendors to negotiate price quotes and equipment service contracts; collaborate the department Financial Assistant to coordinate departmental orders; purchase items from local stores when appropriate. Coordinate delivery of research equipment and supplies.
  • Obtain bids for capital equipment purchases.
  • Submit work requests to Facilities Work Control for repairs and multi-facility shop renovations; includes manage progress on these requests.
  • Manage preventive maintenance and service contracts on biosafety hoods, laminar flow hoods, autoclaves, microscopes, freezers and other research equipment. Including coordinating with vendors and with other departments as needed.
  • Work with Inventory Control in the Purchasing department to locate equipment for inventory records and tagging; arrange for disposal of university property through Purchasing.
  • Manage or assist with research lab clean outs and moves.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
