Job Description

Are you an experienced and ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in transmission electron microscopy? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities?

Precision engineering of complex chemical products and devices used in high-value technology sectors e.g. microelectronics, pharmaceutical, healthcare and fine-chemical products as well as emergent energy materials, can help achieve superior functionality, control of degradation, and the discovery of novel physical and chemical product properties. Such complex chemical products and devices often incorporate low atomic number ions and molecules as building blocks which, due to their sensitivity to the electron or ion beam, requires a step change in nanoscale chemical and structural imaging, if we are to characterize their detailed microstructure.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral Research Fellow that will address this challenge. The project is part of a new EPSRC Resource only Strategic Equipment Grant where a large collaborative research programme includes use of two new state-of-the-art electron beam and ion beam microscopes and the development of optimised sample preparation and data acquisition methods for beam sensitive materials. The experimental programme brings to the fore such frontier analytical techniques as 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and advanced sample preparation methods using focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIBSEM).

Holding a PhD (or have submitted your thesis before taking up the role) in a physical science or engineering subject; you will have research experience of advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques as well as a proven ability to work well both individually and in a multidisciplinary team.
