Job Summary
Join the team that develops the most popular science education site on the internet! The Genetic Science Learning Center’s Learn.Genetics and Teach.Genetics websites are used in virtually every country in the world and constitute approximately one-third of the annual traffic through utah.edu.
We seek a Senior Web Software Developer to join our in-house development, production, research, teacher professional development, and community engagement team. The ideal applicant shares our passion for education, and our vision of universal science and health literacy that empowers individuals to make informed decisions for themselves, their family, their community, and our planet.
The Senior Web Software Developer will be the lead member of our web development team which includes a UX Developer. They will be responsible for leading the planning and implementation of new and existing technologies as they relate to core internal and external projects.
The ideal candidate must have an all-round knowledge of both backend and frontend web development with outstanding backend experience. They must know and have extensive experience with Node.js, MongoDB, Angular, and React as well as experience with WordPress and LearnDash; experience with Azure DevOps and Next.js is preferred. The Senior Web Software Developer must be able to report team and system progress regularly to key stakeholders, senior staff, and other members of the team in ways that are understandable to those without programming or web development expertise. They will be able to able to advise on the development of requests for proposals for web development and quotations.

About the Genetic Science Learning Center (GSLC)
Our mission is “making science and health easy for everyone to understand.” We are best known for our freely-available Learn.Genetics and Teach.Genetics websites which are used in virtually every country and constitute approximately one-third of the annual traffic through utah.edu.
The educational materials we develop and study aim to educate middle and high school students and teachers, patients, and community members. Through courses, workshops, and conferences we train others to use our materials as well as bring science educators together to share ideas and resources. In addition to our own projects, the GSLC collaborates with faculty across the University and at other institutions to develop and study educational materials and programs that address all areas of life science, health and a broad range of other fields.
Our projects require a collaborative, team-based approach from planning through materials production and testing with end users. Our multi-talented team of 16 includes science and health writers, curriculum developers, instructional designers and trainers, graphic designers, multimedia artists, videographer, music composer and sound engineer, web designers, software developers, evaluators, and science education researchers, along with project management and administrative personnel.
Responsibilities
· Supervise all aspects of the GSLC’s web systems (intranet and extranet) including design, release, and maintenance
· Serve as the lead developer on the GSLC’s web development team
· Serve as the GSLC’s lead backend developer
· Provide input in designing end-to-end solutions from a technical perspective
· Work with outside clients to build websites for their research projects; these sites often involve collecting HIPAA-compliant survey and video data from participants
· Collaborate and problem solve with an eye on continuous improvement
· Coach new team members and junior level staff

Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 3-5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Preferences
· Extensive experience with Node.js, MongoDB, Angular, and React preferred.
· Experience with WordPress, LearnDash and GitHub preferred.
· Experience with Azure DevOps and Next.js
Knowledge of templating engines
