We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking Postdoctoral fellow to perform system or component-level design, fabrication, and testing of sensor, MEMS, and microsystem technologies for chemical and biological detection applications. Government agencies such as DARPA, IARPA, and the Department of Defense, as well as commercial partners ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies turn to us to develop next-generation chemical and biological sensor technologies to solve critical national security and commercial challenges. Our multi-disciplinary team of biologists, physicists, chemists, engineers, and computer scientists produces dozens of patents, talks, and publications each year. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Develop a portable chemical or biological sensor system to protect military or civilian personnel from emerging chemical or biological weapon threats + Utilize volatile organic compounds as biomarkers of health status + Use SNL-developed technology like micro gas chromatography columns, micro resonators, and ion mobility spectrometers to develop cutting-edge medical diagnostic sensors for patient care + Use results from laboratory-scale analytical chemistry equipment to discover chemical or biomarker targets for unique national security applications Qualifications We Require: + PhD in Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, or Engineering + Experience in one or more of the following areas: + chemical or biological sensors + chemical or aerosol analysis + wearable or portable detectors + Excellent written and verbal communication skills as demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications and/or conference presentations + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Proven experience in the design, fabrication and testing of portable sensor systems + Knowledge of chemical sensor coatings and surface modifications + Experience using analytical chemistry equipment + Computer aided design (CAD) experience + Familiarity with microfabrication processes and procedures + Experience with data analysis and/or statistics using Microsoft Excel, Matlab, Minitab, or equivalent software + Research experience using volatile organic compound (VOC) markers for physiological monitoring About Our Team: The Biological and Chemical Sensors Department at Sandia National Laboratories specializes in miniature detectors and sensor-based systems for a variety of sensing applications including chemical, biological, and explosives. These detectors and systems can be built into wearable, handheld, UAV, or fixed/installed formats. We have a strong emphasis on nano, micro, and mesoscale fabrication in our R&D including the capability to integrate custom electronics developed in Sandia's MESA facility. We also have state-of-the-art microbiology capabilities to aid in biological sensor development. Our technologies are designed to be non-invasive or minimally invasive, and easy to use in the field or at the point of care.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
