Job Description

The Decision and Infrastructure Science (DIS) Division researches, designs, and delivers scientific tools and methodologies to inform decision-making regarding the most challenging security, risk, and resilience problems. DIS experts have developed methods to understand dependencies and interdependencies, build resilient infrastructure, and recover from emergencies. DIS recently established a new, cross-disciplinary National Economic Research and Resilience Center (NERRC), which provides innovative and transparent economic data access, research, and analysis to support and strengthen economic development and resilience in communities across the nation.

DIS is seeking an analyst to support NERRC’s growing portfolio. This position will support a range of economic development data analytics, policy analysis, and program evaluation activities.  

As a multidisciplinary national laboratory, Argonne offers an exciting atmosphere in which to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects, enabling complex technical problems to be explored through the integrated application of natural, social, and computer science practices.

In this position you will:

  • Analyze national economic development policy, program guidance, and other relevant documentation; identify key challenges, opportunities, and recommendations for enhancement.

  • Apply decision science methods to analyze key nationwide economic development priorities and needs.

  • Identify key patterns and trends related to current and future local economic development and crisis recovery.

  • Develop analyses, indices, and/or models related to the delivery of federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial economic development programs.

  • Develop white papers, technical reports, or other research related to economic development.

  • Support economic recovery and resilience projects after disaster events.

  • Communicate analysis methods and findings to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences.

This position will be hybrid (IL or DC) or remote. The selected candidate must have the ability to work effectively and stay disciplined in a remote environment.

Position Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years experience, Master’s degree and 3+ years experience, or Doctorate in economic development, community development, urban and regional planning, geography, economics, public policy, or other suitable field

  • Experience with economic development or community development, at the local, regional, state, or federal level.

  • Knowledge of data sources, analytical products, and best practices related to economic development, community development, or emergency management.

  • Experience analyzing and visualizing structured and unstructured data related to public policy, economic development, or emergency management.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to translate technical information into plain language.

  • Proficiency with R, Python, or other data analysis software.

  • Skill in contributing to team efforts with internal and external partners.

  • Ability to effectively produce results through self-motivated and self-directed efforts.

  • Ability to meet deadlines including quick turnaround tasks.

  • Experience with economic modeling preferred.

  • Proficiency with Tableau, Power BI, or other data visualization platforms preferred.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
