Job Description

The Nuclear Facilities Engineer is responsible for maintaining overall cognizance of assigned systems, providing systems engineering support for operations and maintenance, and technical support for ensuring continued system operational readiness.. The position functions in full compliance with DOE, OSHA, NEPA, NRC, NFPA and Laboratory Orders, Directives and Standards pertaining to nuclear facility operations and integrated safety management.

The role of a Nuclear Facilities Engineer is to ensure the compliant operational readiness of ANL Hazard Category 2/3 nuclear structures, systems and components (SSCs) within their assigned scope. Using configuration management principles, the engineer is responsible for systems design, specification, testing, installation, maintenance, operations, change management, safety, and related documentation. The Nuclear Facilities Engineer contributes to developing nuclear facility policies and procedures and assists in developing system procedures and training materials for assigned SSCs.

Position Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge and skills within one or more engineering disciplines including electrical, mechanical, and nuclear/reactor. 

  • Considerable analytical and technical writing skills with the ability to effectively complete assessments, work control documents, system walkdown reports, troubleshooting plans, calculations, and evaluations. 

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with internal and external contacts, as well as with individuals of varying levels of technical expertise.

  • Good organizational and project management skills with the ability to work on multiple concurrent projects to achieve desired goals within required timeframes and projected budgets.

  • Comfortable working in a radiological environment and able to follow radiological protection practices and requirements.

  • The position may be eligible for hybrid remote work in accordance with Laboratory policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have experience with ventilation system design, operation, and troubleshooting. 

  • Familiarity with nuclear facilities and their operations.- General knowledge of OSHA, NEC, NFPA, NEPA, and Laboratory safety policies and procedures.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT3 or PT4) dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills brought to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience. The requirements of the various levels are as follows:

•      PT3: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 4 years of experience

•      PT4: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 6 or more years of experience
