Job Description

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities? Do you want to work on a large research project alongside leading academics in the field of Architecture, Arts and Cultural Heritage?

University of Leeds Architecture and Urbanism Research Group (AURG) supports interdisciplinary research. It acts as a platform for tackling global societal challenges by working closely with communities, local authorities, NGOs, policymakers, businesses and the public. The Creative Economies Through Youth-led Arts and Craft in Jordan (CEARC) project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and aims to demonstrate the value of heritage-inspired creative arts in marginalised communities through business start-ups, policy, knowledge exchange and development. The project brings researchers and research ideas into dialogue with the arts and crafts community in Jordan with a particular focus on how participation works in these contexts, the challenges of developing entrepreneurship and the impact they might have on future decision-making processes in the city, including policy making.

The project outputs will be disseminated as a case study on developing innovative economic models using participatory approaches at the intersection of international development, cultural heritage safeguarding and inclusive engagement. This will ensure that knowledge transfer and government policy are responsive to all stakeholders, including those most vulnerable to marginalisation.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher with experience in evaluating policy and practical practices of arts and crafts entrepreneurship in Jordan. The candidate will work closely with the Department of Antiquities team and interview key actors and other participants from the different SMEs and youth-led practices, engaged in the heritage arts and crafts industry. The post holder will evaluate the different processes employed and produce a report with case studies and recommendations, including what these approaches might mean for policy and practice in Jordan. In addition, the candidate will advise and guide the project lead on sufficient approaches in collaboration with local partners to help shape future public engagement programmes.
