Job Description

The Department of Biology at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for two tenure-track appointments in Biology at the Assistant Professor level to begin September 1, 2023. The Biology Department is an inclusive community with research strengths in organismal and evolutionary biology and genomics. The department benefits from well-established connections with the School for Marine Science and Technology and other colleges and universities in the region. The successful candidates’ research programs will complement existing strengths in the Biology Department (College of Arts and Sciences Biology) and have the potential to form new cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Marine Ecologist – The area of specialization is open. Candidates with research interests including coastal ecology, marine organismal, population, or community ecology, species interactions, conservation, or organismal responses to human disturbance and climate change are encouraged to apply.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose research approach crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries and addresses questions of broad significance.

The successful candidates will be committed to excellence in teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students in research. They will teach courses in their area of expertise which contribute to B.S. concentrations in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Marine Biology, Ecology and Evolution, Conservation Biology, and General Biology. They will also instruct courses for the M.S. degrees in Biology and/or Marine Biology, and the Ph.D. in Integrative Biology, and advise research students in those graduate programs. The successful candidates are expected to develop a productive, externally funded research program.

Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to supporting first-generation students and diversity in STEM are strongly encouraged to apply.

Minimum qualifications: An earned doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field, at least two years of postdoctoral research experience, and evidence of scholarly productivity such as peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.

Preferred qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level, a record of external funding or strong evidence of potential to attain external funding for research, and demonstrated success working with people from diverse backgrounds.

Tenure will accrue in the Department of Biology. Salary and startup funds are negotiated upon offer of employment.
