Job Description

Sanford Burnham Prebys is a preeminent, independent biomedical research institute dedicated to understanding human biology and disease, and advancing scientific discoveries to profoundly impact human health. 

Summary:

Responsibilities include providing a stable and reliable network environment for all network users, including those at remote facilities. Actively participate in the assessment, planning, and implementing of solutions including switching, routing, voice, network security and wireless. This position is expected to provide advanced technical support for issues that are escalated from support teams and is the top escalation point for all critical network application related issues; training and knowledge transfers to other team members are also expected.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Primary subject matter expert on network security services.
  • Provide moderately complex troubleshooting and support regarding cyber security related issues and projects assigned.
  • Work with security team to perform tests and uncover network/systems/application vulnerabilities.
  • Evaluates evolving network requirements and provides appropriate network design modifications which address key criteria such as stability, scalability, performance, security, and manageability.
  • Coordinates with vendors on projects to ensure all projects are completed on schedule.
  • Maintains daily operations for switches and wireless infrastructure.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance for UPS battery systems.
  • Administer scheduled backups and restorations of all network devices.
  • Respond to alerts and follow defined processes, escalate issues as appropriate.
  • Escalation point for the Help Desk for specific network problems.
  • Creates knowledgebase articles for internal operations and end user network services.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field or equivalent education, training and/or experience required.
  • Cisco Certified Networking Professional certification or greater preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in the Information Technology industry with network operations.
  • 5+ years of experience with network protocols such as OSPF, BGP, multicast, SIP, 802.1q, VTP, NTP, VSS. Knowledge of Cisco network operating systems.
  • 5+ years experience  in Cisco switching and wireless products
  • 5+ years Palo Alto Next Gen Firewall experience or Cisco ASA Firewall experience
  • Experience with collaboration products a plus
  • Experience with network monitoring solutions.
  • VMWare vSphere and NSX-T experience a plus
  • APC Smart-UPS experience a plus.
  • Service Now experience a plus

Other Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Possess strong attention to detail, analytical, time management, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Project Management skills.
  • Professional proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Supervisory Responsibilities: None
  • Business Travel: Up to 5%
  • Vaccination Requirement: Required.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
  • Available for support during non-standard working hours for purposes of performing network upgrades and problem resolution.
