Responsibilities*
Basic Function and Responsibility

To process and analyze toxicology patient samples utilizing a variety of instruments and methodologies such as HPLC, GC-MS and LC-MS, and accurately report test results within established time limits.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Process incoming samples by ensuring correct labeling, computer log-in, centrifugation, aliquoting, and storage.
Analyze and record quality control materials with documentation of action on out-of-range values.
Accurately transcribe patient data from instrument printouts or worksheets into computer record including any pertinent sample description comments.
Perform and record routine instrument maintenance procedures.
Monitor instrument error codes, perform basic troubleshooting and correct problems as necessary.
Record all instrument and QC problems in log book as a means of communication with other operatorsMaintain work area in a well-stocked, clean condition.?
?Assist supervisor and senior technologists in new test validation efforts as needed and regular patient testing permits.
Assist in the training of co-workers in new assay methods as needed.
Instruct, train, and observe medical technology students, new employees, and pathology residents in bench procedures and theory.
Adhere to all safety/infection control policies and procedures.
Maintain a professional appearance and attitude in interactions with coworkers, supervisors, other hospital personnel, and hospital patients and their visitors.
Analyze patient specimens on instruments and/or by specified manual methodologies within specified turnaround times without sacrificing accuracy.
Supervision Received

General supervision is received from Senior Clinical Technologists, Laboratory Supervisors, Chief Technologist, or Laboratory Directors.

Supervision Exercised

Technical supervision may be exercised over Laboratory Technologists, Laboratory Assistants, Phlebotomists, or Point-of-Care testing personnel.

Required Qualifications*
A Bachelors degree in Medical Technology with certification by an accepted professional agency is preferred.
Experience with therapeutic drug monitoring principles and toxicology analysis methodologies such as GC, HPLC, GC-MS, and LC-MS is preferred.
A Bachelors degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science with clinical laboratory experience, and eligibility for medical technology certification by a professional society is acceptable.
