Under minimal direction of the Principal Investigator, or designee, Senior Research Associate (SRA) directs the work of a laboratory pertaining to the oversight and coordination of clinical research specimen processing, specimen tracking and distribution, sample database maintenance, and will also serve as backup for other key APCF research functions such as QPCR, ELISA, flow cytometry, and Luminex assays. An SRA position has a high degree of autonomy. As a result, the SRA will often consult with PI’s, or their designee, as well as other professional research staff on the scope, design and objectives of clinical research projects. The SRA will primarily direct and coordinate the specimen processing, tracking and distribution functions of the lab. In addition, the SRA will be expected to critically evaluate laboratory processes and procedures and make suggestions for process improvement where necessary. In addition, the SRA will help plan and direct the work of other research associates; contribute original ideas of methodological significance to the laboratory; take responsibility for the execution of laboratory stages of research; standardize new techniques and train laboratory staff in their use; perform specialized procedures, prepare written reports, and provide protocol-specific specimen inventories.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Responsible for the development and execution of major research projects
- Plans and directs the work of research associates, lab assistants, technicians and aides.
- Trains laboratory research staff in specialized procedures, equipment and theoretical concepts behind unique tests.
- Independently evaluates research data and initiates alternative approaches to improve the quality of results by providing input to overall research design that maximizes samples or refines the use of specialized techniques.
- Prepares articles and papers on specialized techniques and results of procedures. Keeps abreast of new and improved techniques.
- Ensures that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with each procedure(s) by utilizing safety procedures and guidelines in handling, storage and disposal of bio-hazardous, infectious and toxic material.
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree required.
- Five or more years related research/ laboratory experience with a Bachelor’s degree or
- Four or more years related research/ laboratory experience with a Master’s degree.
