Job Description

Position Purpose
The Research Software Engineer II (RSEII) will develop and support software and data science serving the entire research community. Collaborating with PIs, researchers and students throughout the entire research project life-cycle, from grant-writing, to planning, execution, publication and dissemination. The RSEII will produce scientific and research related code that runs on Dartmouth HPC environment, focusing on optimization and documentations of research pipelines and pocesses.
Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or 3+ years experience in software development.
Basic experience in OS Admin skills (Unix, Windows, Linux).
Experience working in an agile environment utilizing Scrum.
Strong oral and written communication skills—and a knack for explaining your decision-making process to non-engineers.
A collaborative, adaptable working style, demonstrated initiative and the ability to prioritize your time and efforts.
A thorough grasp of technology concepts, business operations, design and development tools, system architecture and technical standards.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in computer science
Experience with the Slurm job scheduler
Experience with High Performance Compute infrastructure
Database Administration experience in Postgres, MariaDB/MySQL, or Microsoft SQL
Is comfortable using RESTful APIs, database calls and other tools to integrate systems
Is skilled in multiple programming languages
Has advanced knowledge of software development, data design and systems analysis techniques
Familiarity deploying through CI/CD pipelines
Has experience with both client-side development and server-side development
Has experience with and enthusiasm for Agile and Scrum concepts and working practices
Interest in sharing knowledge with the Dartmouth community by participating in instructional opportunities.

Key Accountabilities
Software Development

Provide input on system architecture and design for bespoke research software.
Develop technical architecure design documentation.
Collaborate with researchers, colleagues and subject matter experts to perform requirements analysis for innovative software solutions which facilitate research.
Troubleshoot and debug applications, including working with clients to recreate issues or gather additional information.
Perform statistical analysis of data or provide input on analysis process.
Develop code for distributed workloads on our high performance compute cluster

Inform what technologies the team invests time in learning and training
Provide guidance and mentorship to more junior developers
Develops understanding of similarities and differences in diverse cultures through employee education programs.
Keeps abreast of technological advances in available software/hardware.

Project Management

Assist in project timeline development and coordination with stakeholders
Develop and manage user stories working with business analysts and researchers.
Takes responsibility as project lead for some research projects

Percentage Of Time 10%
Communication and Outreach

Contribute to Research Computings educational and outreach mission.
Provide consulting services to researchers seeking guidance on technical feasibility and cost effectiveness.
Communicates respectfully to a diverse community.
