Job Summary
The positions are supported by the American Cancer Society (ACS) Diversity in Cancer Research Institutional Development Grant (PI: Dr. Jay Vadgama) for four years. Two positions are available immediately in the Division of Cancer Research and Training. The candidates must be Underrepresented Minority (URM) Clinicians who are licensed and providing patient care currently. The candidates should be early career clinical scientists (Instructor or Assistant Professor) within the initial 6 years of faculty appointment and willing to develop a career as a clinical scientist and take the lead in clinical trials/research and eliminate cancer health disparity. The ACS funds will provide protected time (Minimum 50%) for the candidates to participate in career development, mentorship, and lead a cancer research study. Experience in clinical cancer research is preferred.

The selected candidates will be under mentorship and develop individualized career development/mentorship plans for their career development. The candidates will work with their mentors and conduct clinical cancer research in cancer treatment and cancer clinical trials etc. The candidates will engage in courses and workshops at CDU and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to enhance specific skills for conducting clinical cancer research based on an individual’s career development requirements. Those courses and workshops include new cancer treatment strategies, new technologies for cancer diagnosis and treatment, cancer epidemiology, and advanced statistics etc. The clinical scientists will also have the opportunity to attend national meetings to present their research. Completing this Clinician Scientist Development Grant, the Clinical Scientists are expected to have peer-reviewed publications as first authors, develop independent grant applications/obtain funding awards, and be a leader in clinical cancer research in near future.

Essential Duties
• Designing and planning clinical cancer research in collaboration with mentors and senior clinical scientists
• Independently conducting the clinical cancer research, analyze and interpret data obtained from the clinical cancer research project
• Engaging in collaborative studies in CDU, UCLA and/or other institutions
• Participating in Career development activities, including manuscripts and grants’ applications writing

Required Qualifications
• Must be an Underrepresented Minority. URM include African Americans / Blacks, American Indians and Alaska Natives, Hispanics/Latinos, and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders
• Early career clinical scientists (Instructor or Assistant Professor) within the initial 6 years of faculty appointment
• Must have a clinical license and providing patient care currently

Minimum Requirements
• MD or MD/Ph.D degree, or completed RN or PA training

Preferred Qualifications
• Computer skills
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Able to troubleshoot and resolve difficulties
• Strong interpersonal skills and able to collaborate with team scientists and work with a team
• Committed in a career in biomedical science focused on cancer health disparities.
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse community
