SDSU is offering a career opportunity as a Microbiologist within the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory. The laboratory is a new, state-of-the-art facility and the only accredited veterinary diagnostic laboratory in South Dakota. As a team member in the Histology/Tissue Prep Lab and the Clinical Pathology Lab, there is opportunity for acquiring new skills and job advancement.

Job Responsibilities: To have primary responsibility for duties and maintenance of the Tissue Prep lab and assist with the daily duties of the Histology and the Clinical Pathology labs. Duties in the Tissue Prep lab include dissection of formalin-fixed tissue and prepare specimens for further processing, case/specimen identification and tracking, inventory management and quality assurance (QA) records, perform routine maintenance on lab equipment, and maintain the lab in a clean and organized fashion. Duties in the Histology Lab include sample organization, storage and disposal, and records management. . Duties in the Clinical Pathology Lab include processing samples, performing tests, reporting results, maintaining QA records and general cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Methods and techniques of laboratory testing related to Histology and Clinical Pathology
Animal anatomy and basic tissue/organ identification
Safe laboratory practices
Basic principles and practices of microbiology and general laboratory techniques, including operation of basic laboratory equipment

Skill & Ability to:
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Follow standard operating procedure (SOP) protocols
Work safely with laboratory chemicals, materials and specimens
Practice strong attention to detail
Organizational skills
Work independently and as part of a team
Prioritize work to meet competing deadlines
