Research Fellow in Medicinal Chemistry
Leeds, United Kingdom
Job posting number: #7080018 (Ref:EPSCH1037)
Posted: June 18, 2021
Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in medicinal chemistry, or a related discipline? Are you interested in antimicrobial resistance and developing novel antibacterial agents? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?
Antibiotics are a cornerstone of modern medicine but they are under threat from antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We are looking for an ambitious, practical and enthusiastic scientist who can join a BBSRC-funded team in exploring novel binding pockets in bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV to address AMR. Specifically, you will contribute to the molecular design and chemical synthesis of small molecules as inhibitors of bacterial topoisomerases. An extensive knowledge of organic synthesis and the ability to successfully synthesis biologically active molecules is essential.
You will hold a PhD in medicinal chemistry, or a closely allied discipline (or close to completion). You will be based in the laboratory of Professor Colin Fishwick and Dr Martin McPhillie, in the School of Chemistry which has superb facilities for de novo molecular design and synthetic chemistry. You will also work closely with our collaborator Professor Tony Maxwell (John Innes Centre) and another funded Research Fellow performing the biochemistry and structural biology aspects.

This will normally be in the form of a visa but, if you are an EEA/Swiss citizen and resident in the UK before 31 December 2020, this may be your passport or status under the EU Settlement Scheme.
