Job Description

The Manufacturing Analysis Group within CEEESA in the Energy Systems Division at Argonne conducts fundamental science-based modeling and analysis, techno-economic assessment, and environmental impacts analysis of manufacturing and energy systems to support the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Manufacturing Office Strategic Analysis Team. The group is looking for a postdoctoral appointee to conduct research and analysis in the area of electrical, thermal, and chemical energy storage in industrial applications. 

The candidate will combine knowledge of fundamental sciences, computational modeling, and where applicable, machine learning and data-analytic tools to (1) evaluate enabling technologies for electrons-to-molecules energy conversion for storage (chemical/electrochemical), and (2) assess flexible energy storage potential of grid-integrated, adaptive manufacturing systems. 

The candidate will communicate impactful research outcomes through internal and DOE reports, peer-reviewed publications, and conference presentations.  The candidate will also support other related projects in carbon capture, grid integrated and adaptive energy systems.

  • PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or any relevant engineering and physical sciences field.
  • Knowledge of energy and chemical conversion science, technologies, and systems.
  • Knowledge in manufacturing industry and energy systems
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Physics-based computational modeling, reduced order modeling.
  • Process simulations, optimization and techno-economic analysis.
  • Machine learning, statistical learning, uncertainty quantification, data analytics and visualization.
  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

  • Parallel/high-performance computing.
  • Familiarity with object-oriented programming (e.g., Python, Julia).
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary research team environment.
