Job Description

We invite you to apply for a Postdoctoral Appointee position within our Materials Science Division (MSD). 

In this position, you will: 

  • Design, synthesize, and characterize a suite of block copolymer electrolytes (BCEs) with a library of different chemistry, composition, and chain architecture, to develop a fundamental understanding of ion transport in microphase separated BCEs.
  • Create and implement a high-throughput synthetic platform, based on either post-functionalization of a parent polymers by click chemistry using a number of functional groups in varying ratios, or copolymerization of functional monomers interrogate parameter space and identify promising materials systems.
  • Characterize BCEs in a thin film platform using x-ray (soft and hard) probes to determine the physiochemical properties of the materials (lamellar period, interfacial width of lamellae, χ, distribution of components within domains), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to measure ion transport properties.
  • Use directed self-assembly of thin films with controlled structure in conjunction with the characterization techniques to derive fundamental relationships between the polymer chemistry and structure and transport.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required: 

  • A PhD degree in chemistry, materials science or engineering is required with at least three years of experience in polymer synthesis, high throughput reactor systems, purification, and characterization, including NMR, GPC, and structural analysis with x-ray probes.
  • Experience with polymer thin films, block copolymers, directed assembly of soft matter systems, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, combinations therein are also desirable.
  • This position will involve a considerable amount of experimental laboratory work, materials characterization techniques, and data analysis. 
  • The work will require close coordination with multiple team members engaged in molecular simulation and theory and complimentary experimental research.
  • The candidate is expected to think and work independently and lead and contribute in a supporting role to research objectives in a highly interdisciplinary environment of physicists, materials scientists, chemists, and engineers.
  • The position requires skills in written and oral technical communication, including but not limited to preparing progress reports, manuscripts for publication, presentations and seminars, and proposals.
