Job Description

We invite you to apply for a Postdoctoral Researcher position within our Materials Science Division (MSD).

The first project will identify feasible materials and develop designs to provide vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photon detection over large areas. Several pyroelectric and photoelectric materials have been identified as interesting candidate materials, however little study has been done of their properties in the UV. The appointee will synthesize, characterize and evaluate candidate materials for optoelectonic properties in the VUV.

In the second project, high surface
area and conductive coatings will be applied to higher surface area scaffolds for use as photoelectrodes in synchrotron X-ray scattering experiments. The appointee will synthesize, characterize, and evaluate robust conductive coatings grown by precision vapor phase synthesis (atomic layer deposition).

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:

  • These will be interdisciplinary and collaborative projects (as part of a characterization/computation/synthesis team) that includes vapor phase synthesis (atomic layer deposition), in situ characterization, and ex situ electrochemical and optoelectronic evaluation.
  • Must have demonstrated outstanding promise as a research scientist.
  • Strong applicants will exhibit strong basic science understanding, motivation, and an ability to originate, carry out, and publish significant original research.
  • Strong written and verbal skills are required.
  • Previous experience with atomic layer deposition, in situ characterization, ex situ chemical, electrochemical, and optical assessment (XPS, impedance spectroscopy, photoluminescence) are desirable but not required.
  • A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field received within the last three years is required.
