Job Description

The Nuclear Science and Engineering Division is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Appointee. The individual will join a multi-disciplinary team working on projects such as the design of the Versatile Test Reactor, the Transformational Challenge Reactor, and a number of other reactor design projects, including collaborations with external institutions. Expertise is required, but not limited, in at least a few of the following technical fields: core design, modeling & simulation, reactor physics and thermal hydraulics.

The individual will contribute to the design and analysis of advanced nuclear reactors; develop computational strategies and enhance state-of-the-art codes to improve the modeling & simulation capabilities; analyze multi-physics aspects of advanced nuclear fission reactors; produce and present papers and reports describing results of development work, analyses, and investigations.

The applicant will be expected to have:

  • Knowledge of nuclear engineering principles, theories, and practices for the design and analysis of reactor systems.
  • Research experience in one or more specialized area of nuclear science and engineering.
  • Experience in the development and analysis of nuclear reactor systems.
  • Experience in computer programming and scripting.
  • Skill in the conception, design, and evaluation of innovative approaches and solutions to quantitative problems.
  • Skills in the use of computers and in the analysis of computational results, clear and effective documentation and communication of results, and interaction with co-workers and support personnel.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork. 

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in nuclear engineering, physics, or a related field at the Ph.D. degree level with 0+ years of experience.
