Job Description

Provide administrative and faculty leadership for the department and its reporting units, teach courses in general and expertise-specific areas of the discipline as negotiated with the Dean, conduct research and publish in areas of specialization; provide an example of engagement through academic, professional, and public service.
The Department of Psychological Science at Ball State University invites tenured applicants for a senior faculty position. The occupant will also serve as Department Chairperson for a 3-year term (renewable) beginning July 2021. The successful candidate will possess administrative experience and demonstrate commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, to effective undergraduate and graduate teaching, to a well-established research agenda, and to academic service.
As Department Chairperson, the candidate will provide leadership to a department with 24 full-time tenured, tenure track, and contract faculty members. Teaching assignments may include introductory courses as well as upper division courses.

Job Function:

Provide administrative and faculty leadership for the department and its reporting units, teach courses in general and expertise-specific areas of the discipline as negotiated with the Dean, conduct research and publish in areas of specialization; provide an example of engagement through academic, professional, and public service.

Minimum Education:

Ph.D. in Psychology or closely related field from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience:

Five years of tenure line teaching experience in a psychology program or closely related field; demonstrated record of research and publication in any area of psychology; and have earned tenure.

Preferred Experience:

Ten or more years of teaching experience in an undergraduate and/or graduate psychology program; demonstrated administrative experience at the department level; substantial record of research and publication in own area(s) of specialization; demonstrated excellence in teaching.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Effectively represent the department and its faculty to the college and university.
  • Plan strategically with the members of the department for the department’s future development.
  • Continually assess progress toward department goals.
  • Manage department budget.
  • Plan and allocate department resources.
  • Plan curricula with faculty.
  • Assign teaching loads.
  • Ensure adequate student advising.
  • Address student concerns.
  • Manage departmental office and personnel.
  • Provide leadership and support to the faculty in their teaching.
  • Conduct research and participate in service endeavors.
  • Willingly engage external constituents (e.g., alumni, friends, etc.) in support of the mission of the department, the college and the university.
  • Assign and review work, orient and train staff, and make recommendations in all areas related to supervision, including but not limited to interviewing and selection, compensation, discipline, performance appraisal, and training and career development of personnel.
  • Supervise research projects of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
