Argonne National Laboratory & Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering University of Chicago are hiring for a Q-NEXT Postdoctoral Scientist, with a focus on new materials for solid state quantum memories. 

The postdoctoral scholar will carry out research on new oxide based heterostructures and devices for chip-scale solid-state quantum memories. The candidate will join a project aimed at developing quantum repeaters within Q-NEXT, one of five National Quantum Institutes established by the Department of Energy.  We seek a scientist with a strong materials research background and with interest and expertise in thin film materials and heterostructures research. 

We seek a candidate who is interested in a multi-disciplinary approach to applied research and the position offers extensive opportunity to interact with a number of physicists, chemists and device engineers working in the area of quantum information at Argonne and the University of Chicago.  The candidate is expected to work and collaborate independently in her/his research.  Our group has laboratories both at Argonne and the University of Chicago, and extensive thin film materials synthesis capabilities that include MBE, ALD, and UHV-sputter systems, and with access to comprehensive cleanroom and device fabrication capabilities both at Argonne and the Pritzker Nanofabrication Facility (U Chicago).  Prior expertise in device/nanofabrication and testing is not essential and can be taught as needed.   

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • A Ph.D. degree from a range of areas including Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, and Physics are encouraged to apply
  • Experience with molecular beam epitaxy (or equivalent deposition techniques) and hands-on ultra-high vacuum skills is essential. 
  • Prior experience with oxide and semiconductor materials is desired but not necessary. 
  • Nanofabrication and photonics/electrical testing skills are also desired but not essential.

The employment will be with Argonne National Laboratory, and the scientist can also hold a joint appointment at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering.  The research will be carried out at laboratories at Argonne National Labs and at the University of Chicago and will provide the opportunity to work with scientists at both locations.
