Advanced Photon Source at ANL is a world leading source of synchrotron radiation currently providing ultra-bright high-energy x-ray beams to more than 5000 scientists from around the United States and the world. The x-rays are generated by the accelerated electron beam traveling through special arrays of magnets called undulators. In 2023, APS will be upgraded to further increase the x-ray brightness by a factor of thousand. Currently, we are the world’s leader in the field of superconducting undulators (SCUs).

The Magnetic Devices Group of Accelerator Systems Division at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for postdoctoral research associate positions to actively participate in development of technology of SCUs for future synchrotron light sources and free electron lasers (FELs).

The successful applicant will be part of the team which is currently building several SCUs for the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade and also developing novel SCUs based on more advanced superconductors including Nb3Sn and high temperature superconductors as well as developing a concept of cryogen-free cryostats for SCUs.  The incumbent will work on magnetic simulation of various types of novel SCUs using available commercial software packages as well as developing novel techniques of simulating extremely long multi-SCU structures that are necessary for FELs.

  • A doctorate degree in physics within three years of the start of the appointment.
  • Programming expertise in C/C++, Python, FORTRAN, or other scientific programming languages.
  • Experience of magnetic simulations of electromagnetic systems is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills.
