Job Description

We invite you to apply for a Postdoctoral Researcher opening within our Materials Science Division (MSD).

Basic Purpose:

A recent breakthrough showed that single crystal oxide heterostructures can be grown on graphene via a process called "remote epitaxy". This suggests the possibility of a new field we call "stacktronics", where a variety of heterostructures can be synthesized by simply placing one ultrathin oxide layer atop others. In this project, we will use in situ synchrotron X-ray techniques to monitor the growth of oxides on graphene, construct new oxide heterostructures via stacking, and investigate the interfacial quality of the resulting systems. Our aim is to provide new insight into the physics of stacked oxides and their heterointerfaces, exploiting our unique capabilities in MSD and at the APS/CNM.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Oxide thin film synthesis and characterization, x-ray characterization techniques, property measurement skills.
  • Strong communication skills including publication of research results.
  • Good command of the English language is required, as well as a good understanding of numerical methods for data analysis.
  • PhD in Materials Science / Experimental Condensed Matter Physics.
  • The candidate is expected to think and work independently and conduct research in a highly interdisciplinary environment of physicists, chemists, and materials scientists.
