The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Program within the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) at South Dakota Mines seeks exceptional candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The BME program is a joint program with the University of South Dakota; the BME M.S. and Ph.D. programs were established in 2007 and the BME B.S. program was established in 2019. Preference will be given to candidates with experience and research interest in: Biomaterials, Computational Biomedical Engineering, Assistive Technologies/Rehabilitation Engineering, Cellular and Tissue Engineering, or Biodevices and Imaging, though exceptional candidates with other research interests will also be considered. Successful candidates are expected to initiate and/or sustain a nationally recognized, externally sponsored research program in Biomedical Engineering. South Dakota Mines promotes an outstanding educational environment for students; thus, applicants should demonstrate an interest and commitment to excellence in developing and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in the Biomedical Engineering program.
Candidates will have an earned doctorate in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related discipline by the start date. Salary is commensurate with qualifications. The desired start date is Fall semester 2021. Preferred qualifications include previous university teaching, grant writing experience, and a strong record of multi-disciplinary collaboration. Relevant industrial experiences are also considered favorable.
Opportunities exist to collaborate with researchers across the campus including those in Chemical and Biological Engineering, Materials Engineering and Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Nanoscience and Nanoengineering PhD programs. Specific centers and laboratories that might be of interest include: the Arbegast Materials Processing and Joining Laboratory (AMP) , the Biochemical Spatiotemporal NeTwork Resource (Bio-SNTR), the Composites and Polymer Engineering Laboratory (CAPE), the Composites and Nanocomposites Advanced Manufacturing Center (CNAM), the Direct Write Laboratory (DWL), the Surface Engineering Research Center (SERC) and the NSF funded 2-Dimensional materials for Biofilm Science and Engineering (2D BEST) Center. The Chemical and Biological Engineering Department has a long-standing tradition of excellent process oriented educational programs. The CBE and the BME programs reside in the recently constructed and remodeled 80,000 sq. ft. Chemical and Biological Engineering and Chemistry (CBEC) building which offers state of the art teaching facilities and research laboratories. The BME program offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees, and currently is home to about 75 undergraduate and 20 graduate students.
