Summary

This is a great opportunity to work closely with The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) Medical Director in all activities pertaining to growth and scientific development of the MCGI and related activities. Specifically, this position will lead the development of applications and (scientific) management of funded grants, publications, expansion of a community medicine precision oncology program and manage collaborative relationships for the Maine Cancer Genomics Initiative (MCGI).  Given the importance of the MCGI to the people of Maine and JAX, the incumbent must operate with energy, diplomacy, leadership, responsibility and integrity. This position reports to the JAX Medical Director and all functions are performed under the guidance of the JAX Medical Director.

Responsibilities

  • Together with MCGI leadership direct the overall grants and publications pipeline for the MCGI, develop grant applications and oversee implementation of approved grants. Work with the Medical Director on identifying additional opportunities for the MCGI model in other constituencies and with national organizations and on establishing an implementation science focus at JAX.
  • Support the JAX Medical Director in developing and maintaining relationships with internal JAX key stakeholder groups, Maine and Northern New England oncology practices, pharma and academic centers, as well as governmental and industry representatives with the goals of creating opportunities to expand precision oncology opportunities for cancer patients, with special attention to precision oncology and clinical trials.
  • Based on the existing GTB model and in collaboration with the MCGI team, JAX Education and external stakeholders evaluate the impact of GTBs and continuously refine the Genomic Tumor Board (GTB) model. Assume moderator role for GTB’s (in collaboration with the Medical Director and other team members).
  • Work with the MCGI team and clinicians in the MCGI network on identifying improved treatment options for cancer patients by utilizing data analysis and offering potential solutions.
  • Represent MCGI externally at events, during collaborator site visits, at scientific conferences and internally at inter-departmental strategic meetings and presentations to senior leadership. Serve as moderator / MC for MCGI events such as the annual MCGI Forum.
  • Work closely with the Medical Director, Clinical Research Manager, Program Manager and JAX Education (in addition to external stakeholders) as appropriate, to facilitate all MCGI goals including, but not limited to;

o   Identify, investigate feasibility and implement innovative digital technologies.

o   Plan and implement MCGI communications strategies, including a patient awareness campaign

o   Oversee the payment model transition into the second phase of MCGI and manage the test subsidy.

o   Develop a sustainability plan for precision oncology in Maine.

Qualifications

  • PhD (preferably with background in Human Genetics and/or Genetic Counseling), MD/DO, PharmD, or other recognized doctorate level education.
  • 3-5 years post-professional degree experience, preferably with expertise in precision oncology. Strong interest in implementation science research and familiarity with development, launch, and execution of clinical studies/trials a plus. Has experience in writing Foundation and NIH-level grant applications. Publication(s) as first author in peer-reviewed scholarly journal(s). 
  • Strong strategic leadership and results-oriented entrepreneurial mindset with tolerance for ambiguity. Experience in collaborative-network creation and partnership management for startups.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication skills and ability to network, build and maintain effective relationships. Proven track record of sound business judgment and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • High credibility and the ability to communicate complex information clearly and confidently to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% domestically and frequently within Maine.
