Job Description

The Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE) Division is seeking a postdoctoral appointee to analyze multi-physics aspects of nuclear fission reactors including neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, structural mechanics, and fuel behavior. Activities involve reactor analysis including transient analysis, engineered system evaluation, and code verification and validation. The candidate may also develop computational modeling strategies and/or computer codes to analyze reactor systems. The candidate is expected to produce papers and reports describing results of development work, analyses, and investigations.

The applicant will be expected to have:

  • Knowledge of nuclear engineering principles, theories, and practices for the design and analysis of reactor systems.
  • Knowledge of heat transfer and fluid dynamics for nuclear system applications and reactor safety analyses.
  • Skill in the conception, design, and evaluation of innovative approaches and solutions to quantitative problems is necessary.
  • Knowledge of reactor transient and accident analysis methods and experience in using system codes (e.g. RELAP5, TRACE, SAM, or SAS4A/SASSYS-1).
  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Desirables:

  • Skills in the use of computers and in the analysis of computational results, in the clear and effective documentation and communication of results, and in interaction with co-workers and support personnel is required.
  • Knowledge of modern software development practices and programming techniques.
  • Experience in computational modeling of advanced (non-light water) reactor designs.
  • Experience in computational and experimental two-phase flow.

 

The required levels of knowledge and skills are typically achieved through formal training in nuclear engineering or physics at the doctorate level and 0+years of experience.
