Job Description


The Research Associate will primarily focus on phage research, including wet lab development of new methods to assess phage efficacy, the development of new biomimetic models systems to study phage, and the characterization of phage and their bacterial hosts, particularly as it relates to the behavior of bacteria in biofilms and their behavior adhering to and translocating through the gastrointestinal tract. Will also oversee technicians and students working on related topics, assist in administrative and protocol writing duties, as well as the writing and preparation of data for research grants, and serve as a liason to other researchers and physicians in this field.

Job Duties
  • Plan, direct and conduct research experiments
    • Biofilm and translocation assays using bacterial and host cells will be planned and performed
    • Phage will be isolated and purified to assess their interaction with bacterial cells
    • Some animals studies to assess efficacy will be planned and performed
  • Evaluate and analyze data
    • Graphs will be made in Excel and Graphpad, including the graphing of biofilm or bacterial reductions, the titers of phage, and transformation to more user friendly formats such as heatmaps, with statistics
  • Develop research techniques and perform applications required for specific research projects
    • New translocation assays will be developed
    • New phage purification strategies will be developed using precipitation and column based capture approaches
    • Some animal work will be required
  • Extensive investigation and evaluation of the literature will be performed. This includes critical assessment of the literature for the purpose of writing grants and papers
  • Document results of experiments and report to Dr. Maresso - Assisting in the preparation of progress reports.
  • Supervise, schedule and coordinate the activities of less experienced research staff
    • Assist in the oversight of research technicians and students, including helping design experiments and discussion of results 
  • Leadership duties include info above but also presentation at conferences or coordination of meetings and the linking of colleagues for grant planning purposes
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Basic Science or a related field.  Experience in lieu of degree will not be accepted.
  • Three years of relevant experience typically as a Research Assistant, Research Technician or Postdoctoral Fellow/Associate.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Must have a strong background in molecular biology, microbiology, bacteriology, and phage biology, analytical and technical skills, and the ability to liaison between clinical and research partners and collaborators
