Job Description

Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Join our dynamic team that solves significant issues for our nation’s security! You could be the staff researcher we are seeking to partner with and lead certain facets of a dynamic team performing R&D on the manufacture and modeling of Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) for hypersonic flight. We intend to develop mesoscale and macroscale models that couple thermal, chemical, fluid, and mechanical physics to elucidate the interplay of manufacturing methods and TPS performance. You could be performing research on Sandia’s extensive high-performance computing assets using leading-edge multi-physics simulation codes and interacting with manufacturing experts and experimentalists to develop next-generation TPS materials. You will have demonstrated skills and experience in research spanning multiple disciplines, including heat transport, multi-material mechanical deformation, composite materials, microscale/mesoscale modeling, ablation chemistry, and aerosciences. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Develop mathematical models for coupled fluid, chemical, thermal, and mechanical physics in thermal protection system composite materials at both the meso- and macro-scales + Implement models within existing leading-edge high-performance finite element software + Perform large-scale computational analyses to answer scientific and engineering questions supporting technology development + Interact with a dynamic team of experimental and computational scientists and engineers to develop this mission-critical technology. Lead aspects of this effort, including technical, programmatic, reporting and budgetary roles. + Interact with manufacturing and processing experts to understand current TPS processing approaches and lead the development of next-generation methods. + Team efficiently and work independently with other Sandia technical staff members, management and postdocs. + Publish work in peer-reviewed scientific publications and in internal technical reports + Present work to team members, customers, and the larger scientific community

Required:
+ You hold a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Chemistry, or other related engineering or natural science field + Eight years’ relevant experience + Experience with computational modeling and simulation + Experience in thermal protection systems and/or composite materials + You have a strong record of publication and innovation, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

Desired:
Ideally, your background should also include: + Demonstrated experience with computational modeling and simulation with coupled thermal, mechanical, chemical, and/or fluid physics + Demonstrated experience in FEA, Multiphysics modeling at large scales + Demonstrated experience in material science, materials processing or materials manufacture including familiarity with composites, porous or complex materials + Demonstrated experience in bringing together materials processing, modeling and experimental methods to improve material properties + Experience in capillary-driven porous or free surface flows + Experience with thermodynamic modeling and phase change simulation + Demonstrated experience with high-level programming or scripting languages, such as FORTRAN, C, C++, or Python + Proven skills with the Linux operating system + Experience with object-oriented programming in C++ within an existing, large code base. + Experience with version control systems (e.g. Git, CVS, etc.) + Experience with Direct Simulation Monte Carlo methods
