This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to support research related to additive manufacturing of high-performance alloys using LPBF, DED and Wire technologies. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Plan and perform experiments, install, repair, and maintain diagnostic tools, collect and analyze data with the goal of understanding how process parameters affect microstructure and performance of additively manufactured alloys + Perform design necessary to support projects or experiments + Publish journal articles and present work at local and national conferences + Interact and collaborate with other inter-disciplinary research groups within Sandia National Laboratories to develop new research opportunities and projects

Required:
+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field + Experience in designing and conducting experiments + Experience with Materials Processing (e.g., Solidification, Welding) + History of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific and/or technical conferences + Experience with materials characterization tools and instrumentation + Experience with advanced manufacturing or additive manufacturing of metals + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L security clearance

Desired:
+ Experience with sensors (IR cameras, Pyrometers, Acoustic monitors, High speed cameras, etc.) and data acquisition + Experience with metal AM + Experience with metallurgy and processing of high entropy alloys, metallic glasses, and/or magnetic alloys + Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Department Description:

The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and additive manufacturing for the Laboratories. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation. Thin film properties can also be characterized. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso-scale devices, electrical discharge machining (EDM), diamond and laser machining, laser etching as well as technical consulting. Metal additive manufacturing encompasses laser powder bed fusion, LENS, and wire technologies. Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.
