We invite you to apply for a Postdoctoral Researcher position within our Materials Science Division (MSD).

The research project focuses on understanding the novel properties of topological matter, with an emphasis on understanding dynamics of topological phase transitions. The successful candidate will have a primary background in condensed matter physics (preferably in the area of topological materials) with significant experience in both growth of single crystals and characterization of transport, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties. Candidates will have demonstrated creativity and success in the growth of topological materials techniques such as flux growth, floating-zone growth, Bridgman growth, vapor growth. Candidate will also have demonstrated experience in interpreting transport, magnetic, thermodynamic, and/or structural measurements on topological matter. The candidate will work in a team with other materials synthesis and crystal growth experts to create high quality bulk crystalline specimens of target materials and explore their unique properties.

Candidates should have experience with or an enthusiastic interest in learning new techniques of measurement, specifically x-ray scattering and time-resolved probes. This position will involve a considerable amount of experimental laboratory work with a variety of synthetic techniques in high temperature solid state reactions and crystal growth. The work will also include a variety of physical measurements in the laboratory or at user facilities. A strong, demonstrated commitment to collaborative science is essential. Results will be published in refereed journals and through oral presentations at meetings, conferences, symposia, and seminars. Up-to-date awareness of developments in the relevant areas of research will be expected.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience: 
  • Primary expertise in solid state physics and secondary expertise in growth of materials.
  • Demonstrated research emphasis in topological matter.
  • Experience with bulk high temperature crystal growth.
  • A background performing a variety of transport, magnetic, thermodynamic and/or structural studies of materials.
  • The candidate is expected to creatively think and work independently and conduct research in a highly interdisciplinary environment of chemists, physicists and materials scientists.
  • Candidates must have a Ph.D. in physics, materials science, chemistry, or equivalent.
  • Candidate must have strong written and oral communication skills and work well with others in a team oriented environment.

The following majors are NOT considered in this position: nanoscience, thin film growth, and organic or bio-related areas.
