The Senior Systems Engineer (SSE) is responsible for the maintenance, reliability, security and performance of systems on the University’s virtualization platform, VMware. With other members of the Infrastructure Services team, the SSE deploys and integrates services and applications within the virtual systems infrastructure. With the Associate Director of Enterprise Systems Administration and the Senior Infrastructure Architect, the SSE provides leadership with the operations and support of enterprise Linux systems. The SSE also supervises and manages the workload of the Windows Systems Administrator. In collaboration with the Associate Director of Endpoint Solutions, the SSE supports the management of Active Directory. The SSE coordinates system activities with application developers, network engineers, and stakeholders from the University community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Deploys and maintains hyperconverged systems infrastructure in a hybrid cloud environment (i.e. campus based systems, AWS, Azure, etc.) which includes virtual machines running Windows and Linux operating systems, physical systems running the ESXi hypervisor, vSAN (software defined storage), and NSX (software defined networking).
Plans, tests and installs applications, performs regular software and firmware upgrades, and routinely patches enterprise systems in a manner to ensure high availability and security with effective use of Ansible automation software, Powershell/PowerCLI, Bash, Perl and/or Python.
Supervises and manages the workload of the Windows Systems Administrator responsible for Windows operating systems, applications, and Active Directory infrastructure.
Collaborates with database administrators and application owners to build system configurations that adequately address functional requirements.
Designs, implements and manages comprehensive 24×7 health monitoring for systems, network and applications with software such as WhatsUpGold and Nagios.
Ensures consistent reporting and tailors event logging in order to meet security and audit requirements.
Manages the system backup schedules for all tiers of University workloads and any necessary restores using Cohesity data management platform.
Responds in a timely manner to customer service issues in the service management & project portfolio ticketing platform.
Provides upper-tier technical support for Linux OS issues and requests as well as escalated G Suite administration issues such as email routing and management.
Maintains technical currency through research, independent study and formal training.
Develops and maintains documentation for systems deployments and upgrades. Ensures that DR documentation is updated as system changes are completed.
Deploys Linux system management enhancements, including utilities such as Kickstart and Linux high-availability services.
Recommends solutions based on research and evaluating industry trends.
Evaluates cost and value proposition of on prem and cloud solutions in an ongoing manner.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
Must be able to sit or stand for considerable periods of time at a computer, ability to lift hardware, and be able to replace system components in the case of failure.
Transporting equipment on a hand truck.
Occasional evening and weekend hours.
Serve as primary, on-call support person 10-12 times per year; Be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for critical systems problems on campus.
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field and/or a combination of education and experience.
Five or more years of demonstrated systems experience with working knowledge of Linux and VMware ESXi.
Two to five years of experience with virtualization technologies, primarily VMware and associated solutions, namely vSAN and NSX.
Experience programming in Bash, Perl or Python.
Knowledge of best practices in computing security and administration.
Firm understanding of modern DevOPs technologies such as Ansible, GIT, and Docker.
Experience with AWS, Google Cloud or Azure platforms, a plus.
Must possess excellent problem-solving, organization, interpersonal, written and oral skills and professional skills.
Certification in RedHat, VMware, AWS, Azure, preferred.
Must be able to work in a team environment and demonstrate initiative.
