Job DescriptionThe Systems Biology Department is seeking a creative and highly dedicated scientist to work with a muti-disciplinary team of researchers who are passionate about attaining success while solving some of societies’ greatest challenges. We are looking for a bioanalytical biochemist to augment our programs in biomanufacturing, bioremediation, and biodefense and infectious diseases. The selected candidate may work on projects addressing diverse missions, from renewable biofuels and carbon capture, to bioproducts, including discovery and characterization of therapeutics and probiotics, to bioremediation, biodegradation, and biofouling of materials. You will also have the opportunity to expand our programs into areas aligned with your expertise and interests. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Developing research plans as a team member or principal investigator + Coordinating and mentoring postdocs, technologists and student interns + Generating experimental results and analyzing and communicating data + Writing technical reports and high-impact research publications, and innovative research proposals
+ PhD in Bioanalytical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related field; + Experience in analytical chemistry techniques for bioproduct, biomaterials, natural products and chemical biology applications; + Experience growing microbial communities, and analyzing the substrates being consumed and metabolites being produced, or adapting microbial chassis and microbial communities to enable growth on new carbon sources or new functional properties; + Eligibility to acquire a DOE Q-level security clearance.
+ Familiarity with multi-omics analyses, including genomics and transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and associated data analysis methods; + Expertise with mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography; + Familiarity with diverse biochemical and biophysical analytical methods, including high throughput and robotic formats; + Knowledge of algal systems including conversion to products, and bacterial products; + Practical knowledge of synthetic biology techniques relevant to biomanufacturing; + Experience leading teams, planning and organizing work to achieve project milestones, reporting to funding agencies, grant writing, and publishing peer-reviewed manuscripts; + Proven experience in writing successfully-funded scientific grant proposals and peer-reviewed publications.
The Systems Biology Department performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare, and energy and environmental security. The department is composed of a multidisciplinary team of staff, postdocs, technologists, and students with expertise in microbiology, virology, molecular biology, computational biology, synthetic biology and analytical chemistry. The basic research activities in the department are focused on the characterization of pathogens and of host-pathogen interactions using omics and CRISPR-based tools, and study of bacterial mobile elements and microbiomes relevant to human health and the environment. Applied research activities are focused on enzyme and microbial engineering for biomass development, development of engineered proteins, viruses, bacteria and stem cells as anti-microbial therapies and vectors, and innovation and delivery of CRISPR-based medical countermeasures.
