Job Description

The Decision and Infrastructure Science (DIS) Division researches, designs, and delivers scientific tools and methodologies to inform decision-making regarding the most challenging security, risk, and resilience problems. DIS experts have developed methods to understand dependencies and interdependencies, build resilient infrastructure, and respond to emergencies. As a multidisciplinary national laboratory, Argonne offers an exciting atmosphere in which to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects, enabling complex technical problems to be explored through the integrated application of natural, social, and computer science practices.

 

DIS is seeking one or more post-doctoral appointees to support a multidisciplinary disaster research portfolio. The selected candidate(s) will have the opportunity to carry out applied research related to readiness of emergency management systems, effectiveness of recovery and resilience strategies, and/or support preparedness assessment programs. The selected candidate(s) may also lead one or more projects related to the provision of preparedness technical assistance to local and state emergency managers (topics TBD). Candidates should understand that their portfolio will be driven by sponsor office requirements and research will reflect their operational and strategic program requirements.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

In this position, you will:

 

  • Support principal investigators in the development and implementation of research methodologies to support analysis of emergency and disaster management programs.
  • Develop analyses, tools, models, and reports in support of emergency and disaster management research programs.
  • Lead small projects and tasks related to building and sustaining national preparedness capabilities.
  • Develop and deliver technical assistance on topics relevant to emergency and disaster management programs for local and state government officials.
  • Develop technical reports and travel to conferences, seminars, and meetings as requested by the sponsors.

To be considered for this position with must have:

  • PhD in a field related to emergency and disaster management.
  • Experience commensurate with the conduct of graduate-level research in emergency and disaster management or a closely related field in the social or hard sciences.
  • Ability to design research projects, develop, test, and apply methodologies, and clearly present results.
  • Ability to perform basic statistics related to your research.
  • Strong skills in oral and written communication. This includes the capability to interact with team members and sponsors on all aspects of sponsored research activities.
  •  Ability to learn basic project financial management.
  • Internships or professional experience in a local or state emergency management office is highly valued.
  •  Course work or experience in operations research is also valued.

  • All candidates must pass a general background check and drug screening for employment and may be required to obtain a “Q” clearance.
