Job DescriptionDo you have an interest in research in advanced polymeric and organic materials to meet a range of specialized applications? We may have the challenge you are looking for! Join our team of scientists as a Postdoctoral Appointee and make a difference. You will work with staff members and technologists in using a range of techniques to characterize key properties of organic materials and composites (encapsulants, adhesives, gels, under-fills, conformal coatings, composites, etc.). The applicant should be familiar with and able to synthesize polymers using radical polymerization (e.g. traditional, ATRP, etc.) and characterize the polymers using various mechanical and other testing (e.g. NMR, FTIR, GPC, DSC, TGA, rheology, DMA, TMA, etc.). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: + Materials characterization, including: thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, NMR, FTIR, Raman, XPS, SEM, GPC, and rheological testing + Mechanical testing, including the use of universal testing machines to execute both (1) standard measurements such as modulus, fracture toughness, and strength of materials/structures and (2) innovative test designs to resolve specific questions about materials or complex structures + Polymer and/or organic synthesis and characterization, with emphasis on traditional radical polymerizations, RAFT, ATRP, etc. + Nanocomposite formulating, including optimization of compounding procedures, particle loading, and particle surface modifications. + Epoxy formulating and testing (mechanical, thermal, electrical properties, cure kinetics, rheology) with filled and unfilled systems + Work with various nanoparticles, particularly carbon-based (CNTs, graphene) including particle modification (chemical surface treatments). + Mission needs may require using conventional instrumentation in unconventional manners, augmenting existing instrumentation, or developing new apparatus and/or accessories + Basic lab and equipment maintenance and safety paperwork This position will require working with organizations across SNL as well as working with technologists in the group. You'll encouraged to work both in groups and independently to solve research and development problems and develop new technologies. You will have the opportunity to take leadership responsibilities with respect to working with customers, reporting results (both written and oral), publishing papers, attending conferences, and participating in program meetings.
+ Have, or are pursuing, a PhD in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar field, and possess a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics + Experience in polymer science/engineering, as demonstrated by publications and presentations + Experience in polymer and/or organic synthesis and characterization + Experience with materials characterization and mechanical testing, including: thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, NMR, FTIR, Raman, XPS, SEM, GPC, and/or rheological testing + Able to acquire a DOE security clearance
+ Dedication to laboratory safety + Ability to work independently and in teams + A dedication to producing high-quality results using good laboratory techniques and focused attention to detail + Ability to maintain detailed laboratory notebook + Solid communication and interpersonal skills for explaining the important aspects of technical work to coworkers and customers + Motivated and organized, and able to work independently under the mentorship of a PhD scientist + A background in the types of synthesis, materials characterization and mechanical testing described in the job responsibilities + Primary consideration will be given to individuals who have demonstrated the ability to rapidly learn skills and work in a fast-paced laboratory + Dedication to laboratory safety + Current DOE security clearance (L or Q)
The Organic Materials Science Department researches and develops advanced materials and processing strategies to meet a range of specialized applications in nuclear weapons, national security and industrial applications. Our department is dedicated to scientific discovery, creativity, innovation and practical solutions for our diverse customers. The department specializes in aging science and predictive performance of polymers, synthetic organic and polymer chemistry, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and physical characterization of organic materials, and advanced manufacturing of polymers. We perform reliability studies for polymers with an emphasis on understanding degradation mechanisms, structure-property relationships, and performance margins. Areas of R&D in the department include: developing novel encapsulant materials, crafting new thermoset chemistries for additive manufacturing, developing innovative NMR techniques to understand transport phenomena in polymers, measuring and optimizing electrical performance of polymer dielectrics, elucidating the interdependency of chemical change and polymer physics over long timeframes, crafting reversible and degradable chemistries, understanding polymer interfacial properties and adhesion, measuring and predicting radiation effects on polymers, monitoring of reactive thermoset cure kinetics, and quantifying permeation behavior and spatially dependent degradation processes. We perform a complete spectrum of chemical, structural, thermal, rheological, and mechanical characterization of polymeric materials that must perform over 30 - 40 year lifetimes.
