Job Summary/Basic Function:
The successful candidate will employ a variety of experimental techniques to assist with studies of autoimmune optic neuritis in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis. Additional studies of retinal degeneration using mice will also be pursued to determine if compounds found in green, leafy vegetables show therapeutic promise for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of vision loss in elderly adults. Further responsibilities will include assisting the laboratory manager with duties critical to running of the laboratory. Methods and approaches used will include animal husbandry, administration of therapeutics, optokinetic tracking to measure mouse visual acuity, molecular biology (e.g., PCR), and (immuno)histology. Candidates should anticipate contributing to an intellectually rigorous and stimulating laboratory environment designed to identify therapeutic and nutritional treatment strategies for diseases that cause blindness. Identify, prepare and perform a variety of research experiments according to protocol. Projects and assignments are typically non-routine and variable in nature. Receive no instruction on routine work, but receive instructions on new work or special assignments. Collect and present data to Manager or Principal Investigator. Expected to perform the following duties after appropriate training and time in the position.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree typically in one of the biological sciences or equivalent years of professional, paid, relevant laboratory experience. Should be familiar with lab techniques.

Minimum Degree Required:
Bachelors Degree

Work Hours: Typically Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.

Preferred Qualifications:
1-5 years of lab experience working with rodents is highly preferred.

Physical Demands:
Regularly required to stand, use manual dexterity, talk or hear; Frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms; occasionally sit; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; vision abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, or rodent dander. May work with toxic, caustic chemicals, radioactive materials, liquid nitrogen, human tissue or blood. Potential risk of electrical shock. Occasional exposure to cold 4C, and/or extreme cold -80C from freezers. Noise level is usually moderate.
