Job Description

The Nuclear Science and Engineering Division is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Reactor Safety & Materials Department. You will support the nuclear and reactor engineering design and experimental programs within the Nuclear Engineering Division with a special focus on experimental thermal hydraulics, heat transfer, and reactor safety. Your activities under supervision will support the design, development and technology maturation of advanced reactor cooling systems for the DOE Advanced Reactors program and other advanced reactor projects. Focus areas include experimental fluid mechanics and heat transfer systems, instrumentation and control, and component design, development, and testing.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience in both experimental and theoretical fluid mechanics and heat transfer in primary / secondary reactor coolant systems
  • Firsthand experience with the design, assembly, and operation of experimental thermal hydraulic test loop utilizing water or other liquids at elevated temperatures and pressures
  • Experience with experimental design and operation including both traditional (thermocouples, pressure transmitters, flow meters, level, etc.) and advanced instrumentation (PIV, LDV, DTS, etc.) including their specification, installation and operation.
  • Knowledge of laboratory/shop practices and procedures, including proficiency in general fabrication and assembly of mechanical and electrical component and systems
  • Skills in developing experimental approaches and techniques
  • Use of computational tools such as MATLAB / Python for analyzing and interpreting experimental data and results
  • Skills in clear and effective interaction with co-workers and support personnel.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written communication.

Desirables

  • Knowledge of mechanical equipment (motors, pulleys, gears, pumps, valves, etc.) and thermal effects on materials and components (expansion, evaporation, etc.)
  • Prior resistance heating systems and LabVIEW/Eurotherm/industrial control experience
  • Skills in computer aided design software such as AutoCAD, Inventor, etc.
  • Working knowledge of fluid mechanics simulation tools (e.g. FLUENT or STAR CCM) or system level thermal-hydraulics codes such as RELAP.

 

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or associated field at the Ph.D. degree level & 0 years’ professional experience.
