Job Description

The APS XSD Nanopositioning Support Laboratory provides engineering and technical support to enable world-class performance of nanopositioning instruments for APS operations and research, as well as for APS Upgrade project and DOE Cavity-Based X-ray Free Electron Laser (CBXFEL) project. A significant effort is being invested in the research and development of various nanopositioning stages and related metrology systems for novel synchrotron radiation instrumentation and its applications. Under the guidance of a senior engineer supervisor, the Postdoctoral Appointee will develop advanced techniques (e.g., redundantly constrained flexural structures) for novel nanopositioning stages and related instruments for APS operations, APS Upgrade, and DOE CBXFEL project.

The successful candidate will have:

  • The candidate should hold a Ph.D. before starting this position.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience for precision flexural stages design with high-vacuum or ultra-high-vacuum compatibility.Comprehensive knowledge of redundantly constrained flexural nanopositioning stages design and control is a plus.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience of structural dynamic control for complex multidimensional motion mechanism and vibration damping mechanisms. Comprehensive knowledge of control and analyses of redundantly constrained flexural mechanism is a plus.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience of high performance real-time feedback and feedforward control algorithm and system implementation. Comprehensive knowledge of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques for redundantly constrained flexural mechanism applications is a plus.
  • Good ability for design and test ultra-precision motion control system with high-vacuum or ultra-high-vacuum compatibility.
  • Good skill for mechanical design tools such as SolidWorks and AutoCad.
  • Good knowledge of computer software and capabilities for modeling, optimization, and simulation.
  • Considerable skill in written and oral communication.
  • This level of scientific sophistication is normally associated with a PhD in opto-mechanics or precision mechanics engineering
