Job Description

The Opportunity: Skagit Valley College (SVC) is seeking qualified teacher-scholars for a full-time, tenure track faculty position in Chemistry. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional classroom skills, enthusiasm for the subject matter, an inclusive and equity-driven approach to teaching and learning, and innovative pedagogy and teaching strategies. Science classes for the Skagit Valley College District are offered at our Mount Vernon Campus and Whidbey Island Campus located in Oak Harbor.

SVC faculty teach an equivalent of 15 credits per quarter and participate in College service. This position is expected to begin in Fall Quarter, September 2020.

This position is based primarily at the Mount Vernon Campus; however, Instructors may be called upon to teach at the Whidbey Island Campus located in Oak Harbor.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide classroom and/or online instruction in general and introductory Chemistry and/or other closely related disciplines;
Provide leadership in developing the Chemistry program, developing innovative programming, curricula, and pedagogy that incorporate program and general education learning outcomes;
Conduct ongoing development, assessment, and revision of curriculum that reflects innovative pedagogy and advances in the field of Chemistry;
Work collaboratively with SVC faculty from other fields to develop appropriate curriculum for the Chemistry program that reflects diversity of student experience, including underrepresented and underserved students;
Create a positive learning environment for students using diverse teaching methods to support and enhance student success;
Collaborate with faculty from other disciplines or fields to develop and to offer integrative learning experiences;
Develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes;
Advise and mentor students, including those from underrepresented and underserved groups;
Collaborate with other disciplines and transfer institutions to increase enrollment and support student retention in the program with a focus on ameliorating equity gaps;
Develop, assess, and analyze program outcomes for the purpose of program improvement and enhanced student learning;
Engage in scholarly activities that complement and inform teaching;
Use inclusive and effective teaching methods to support and to enhance learning for students inside and outside of the classroom;
Incorporate an equity-minded approach to teaching and learning;
Engage in scholarly activities that complement and inform teaching;
Mentor and assist adjunct faculty teaching Chemistry or similar disciplines;
Participate in division, department and other College activities, including College
governance;
Fulfill full-time faculty responsibilities in accordance with the negotiated agreement and Skagit Valley College policies;
Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Impart excitement and enthusiasm into teaching of Chemistry;
Demonstrate knowledge and familiarity with current theories, research, and practice in Chemistry;
Develop innovative programming, curricula, and pedagogy that incorporate program and general education learning outcomes;
Engage students through innovative instructional approaches including learning communities, service learning projects, contextualized learning, etc.;
Demonstrated commitment to equity-minded approaches to teaching and learning for all students;
Practice and adopt a variety of active learning strategies that facilitate student learning and that are inclusive of all cultures and backgrounds;
Support students in accessing appropriate instructional and non-instructional services to facilitate student retention, completion and academic success for all students;
Adapt to a variety of teaching situations, including interdisciplinary learning communities, online and hybrid modalities, etc.;
Express appropriate awareness of the history of underrepresented groups and promote an equitable work and learning environment;
Build a Chemistry program that meets the needs of the College's students and the community;
Recruit and inspire diverse student populations to embrace learning and facilitate completion;
Work and interact effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and other various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in support of SVC's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion;
Act according to principles of integrity, respect, open and honest communication, collaboration, and compassion.
