Job Description

The Andolfatto lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University is seeking two Staff Associates to assist in its research agenda. Using state-of-the-art functional genomics tools, including next-generation DNA/RNA sequencing and genome-editing technologies, the Staff Associates will interact with the Principal Investigator, scientific staff, and students (graduate and undergraduate) in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and collaborate with evolutionary, molecular, and development biologists.

Responsibilities will include:

a) High-throughput DNA and RNA isolation, quantification and library preparation for next-generation sequencing (Illumina, Pacbio, Oxford Nanonpore). – 25%
b) Molecular biology methods (vector design and construction, PCR, sanger sequencing, protein expression, isolation and quantification). -25%
c) Other routine laboratory techniques: basic microbiology, cell line proliferation and transfection, Drosophila embryo injection and screening, biochemical assays (enzyme activity, ligand binding, protein quantification, etc). – 15%
d) Assisting in Data Analysis – 15%
e) Curating Samples – 10%
f) Maintaining excellent records of lab work – 10%

Position Requirements:
Completion of an undergraduate degree in Biology or a related field.
Prior wetlab experience (through internships or previous employment).
Experience with basic molecular biology techniques: DNA and RNA extractions, PCR, cloning.
Strong lab, scientific reasoning, and organizational skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, computer skills, and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:
One year or more full-time genetics/genomics lab experience and experience with handling samples in high-throughput formats (plate-based).
Experience with Drosophila or other insects.
Experience working with cell lines (proliferation and transfection).
Experience working with the linux/unix command line and/or bioinformatics workflows
